Yamaha’s two entry scooters sit within a few million dong of each other, and they answer the same question differently: the Janus is the classic light-and-cheap city scooter, the Gear 125 Hybrid is the new-tech alternative with electric launch assist. Both reviews use only official Yamaha Vietnam figures (retrieved 23 September 2026).

Engine and hybrid assist

Both use a 124.9 cc Blue Core single-cylinder engine with CVT. The Janus publishes 7.0 kW at 8,000 rpm and 9.6 Nm at 5,500 rpm; the Gear publishes 6.2 kW at 6,500 rpm and a lower-peaking 10.6 Nm at 4,500 rpm. The Gear’s trick is the hybrid system: for up to three seconds after launch, an electric motor assist feeds extra pull into take-offs - useful two-up or uphill, and explained in our hybrid systems guide.

Fuel economy

The Gear is the most economical scooter verified table: 1.7 L/100 km published, versus the Janus’s 1.98 L/100 km. The Gear also carries more fuel: a 5.1-litre tank against the Janus’s 4.2 litres. For riders covering big monthly distances, that difference compounds - our fuel economy ranking has the full table.

Weight and size

Janus: 97 kg, seat 770 mm. Gear: 96 kg, seat 750 mm, with a long flat 790 mm seat and a flat footboard that taller riders and pillions appreciate. The two are effectively tied in our verified weight table - both among the lightest scooters sold in Vietnam.

Storage

Gear: 17.4 litres underseat plus a front storage pocket and twin front bag hooks. Janus: 15.3 litres plus a USB port. Both fit a half-helmet plus a rain jacket, neither fits a full-face helmet - see our storage comparison.

Equipment

Both now come with smart keys and phone-connected features (Y-On app features on the Gear’s LCD). The Gear adds full LED front lighting and a USB charging port.

Price

At retrieval time Yamaha listed the Janus from 29,151,000 VND and the Gear 125 Hybrid from 30,437,000 VND (34,364,000 VND premium version). For roughly a million dong more, the Gear buys hybrid assist, better economy and more storage.

Verdict

Janus for the tightest budget; Gear for everyone else - the hybrid assist and 1.7 L/100 km figure make it the smarter buy of the pair unless every dong counts. Neither is a price-published rental model: contact us to confirm current availability, and run our pre-ride checklist on whatever you ride.
