The Gear 125 Hybrid is Yamaha’s entry-level city scooter, and its party trick is unusual at this price: a hybrid system that gives the engine an electric push when you pull away. All figures below come from the official Yamaha Motor Vietnam Gear 125 Hybrid product page (retrieved 23 September 2026); unpublished values are omitted rather than estimated.

Engine and the hybrid system

A Blue Core 124.9 cc single-cylinder four-stroke engine, air-cooled, with electronic fuel injection and CVT. Official maximum power is 6.2 kW at 6,500 rpm and maximum torque 10.6 Nm at 4,500 rpm - torque that peaks low, exactly where a city scooter needs it. The hybrid part: for up to three seconds after launch, a smart motor generator feeds battery power into the drivetrain to boost acceleration, which Yamaha says is especially useful uphill or two-up. Our hybrid systems explainer covers how this works and what it does not do (it is an assist, not electric-only riding).

Fuel economy and range

Yamaha’s published consumption is 1.7 litres/100 km from a 5.1-litre tank - the most economical figure we have recorded from a manufacturer page, ranking it first in our verified fuel-economy table. Real-world consumption always varies with traffic, load and riding style.

Size, weight and handling

At 96 kg it is the lightest scooter verified weight table - lighter than the Honda Vision’s 97 kg and the Yamaha Janus’s 97 kg. Seat height is 750 mm, dimensions 1850 x 685 x 1075 mm, wheelbase 1,280 mm, ground clearance 135 mm. The long, flat dual seat (790 mm long) and the flat footboard make it comfortable for taller riders and pillions alike, and a rear grab bar with an integrated hook helps with carrying.

Equipment

A front hydraulic disc with a rear drum brake and UBS (the combined braking system that shares braking force between wheels), tubeless 110/70-12 tyres, full LED front lighting, a USB charging port in the front storage pocket, a SmartKey system and a multifunction LCD with call and message alerts through the Y-On app. The underseat bay holds 17.4 litres. Maximum payload is listed at 157 kg.

Who it suits

Budget-conscious commuters, students and new riders who want modern features - smart key, connectivity, hybrid assist - without moving up in price. Yamaha’s list prices at retrieval time: from 30,437,000 VND for the standard version, 34,364,000 VND for the premium version. Inside Yamaha’s range, our Gear vs Janus and Gear vs FreeGo comparisons break down the differences; against Honda, our Gear 125 vs Vision comparison is the entry-level duel.
