The Honda Vision is Vietnam’s default city scooter; the Yamaha Gear 125 Hybrid is the newest challenger with an electric-assist engine. Both sit at the bottom of their brands’ ranges, and both publish class-leading economy figures. All data from official Honda and Yamaha Vietnam pages (retrieved 23 September 2026).
Engine and assist
Vision: 109.5 cc air-cooled eSP, 6.59 kW at 7,500 rpm, 9.29 Nm at 6,000 rpm. Gear: 124.9 cc air-cooled Blue Core, 6.2 kW at 6,500 rpm, 10.6 Nm at 4,500 rpm, plus hybrid assist - up to three seconds of electric boost at launch. Similar power, different delivery: the Gear’s torque peaks 1,500 rpm lower and gets an electric shove, so it feels stronger pulling away, especially two-up (see our hybrid explainer).
Fuel economy
Gear: 1.7 L/100 km published - the best figure in our verified table. Vision: 1.82 L/100 km - second-best. Both from 5-ish litre tanks (5.1 vs 4.8). These two are the cheapest scooters to run in the country, and the ranking article shows the full field.
Wheels - the Vision’s trump card
Vision: 16-inch front wheel (80/90-16), the defining feature covered in our 16-inch wheel guide - better pothole behaviour than any small wheel. Gear: 110/70-12 tubeless. Around broken pavement the Vision rides calmer; in dense jams the Gear turns tighter.
Weight and size
Gear: 96 kg, seat 750 mm, long flat seat. Vision: 97 kg, seat 785 mm. Nearly tied on weight; the Gear’s seat is 35 mm lower, which shorter riders notice (our seat-height table).
Storage and equipment
Gear: 17.4-litre bay, front pocket, twin hooks, USB port, SmartKey, LCD with phone alerts. Vision: smaller bay, LCD meter, smart-key versions. The Gear is better equipped; the Vision carries the reputation and resale.
Price
Yamaha listed the Gear from 30,437,000 VND; the Vision undercuts most of the market and remains the volume default.
Verdict
Vision for the 16-inch ride, resale and ubiquity; Gear for features, the lower seat and hybrid assist at entry money. Renters: the Vision is price-published at Nguyen Tu (200,000 VND/day; 800,000-1,000,000 VND/week; 1,800,000-2,000,000 VND/month); the Gear is not - contact us to confirm current availability.
