Inside Yamaha’s own range the Gear 125 Hybrid and the FreeGo 125 overlap on price but not on philosophy: the Gear is the tech-forward city runabout with hybrid launch assist, the FreeGo is the sporty all-rounder with a bigger bay and an ABS version. Engine and assist

Both run the Blue Core 124.9 cc engine with CVT. FreeGo: 7.0 kW at 8,000 rpm, 9.0 Nm at 5,500 rpm, forced-air cooled. Gear: 6.2 kW at 6,500 rpm, 10.6 Nm at 4,500 rpm, air-cooled, plus the hybrid assist - up to three seconds of electric boost from launch. The FreeGo has the sportier top end, the Gear the stronger low-end tug; neither is fast, both are honest commuters.

Economy

Brakes

FreeGo: front disc, rear drum, and an ABS-equipped FreeGo S version - one of the few sub-35-million scooters with ABS in Vietnam. Gear: front disc, rear drum with UBS combined braking. Storage

FreeGo: 25 litres - a full-face helmet bay. Gear: 17.4 litres plus front pocket and hooks. The FreeGo is the cargo tool of the pair.

Size and weight

Gear: 96 kg, seat 750 mm, long flat seat. FreeGo: 100 kg, seat 780 mm. Both are light by class standards; the Gear is the lightest scooter verified weight table.

Price

Gear from 30,437,000 VND; FreeGo from about 30,340,000 VND (Yamaha’s listed figures at retrieval). Effectively the same money.

Verdict

Buy the FreeGo for storage and the ABS option; buy the Gear for hybrid assist, a lower seat and the best published economy in the country.
