Stop and Start - the system that switches your scooter’s engine off at a standstill and restarts it instantly when you twist the throttle - has spread from cars to Vietnamese scooters. This explainer covers what the manufacturers actually publish, which verified models carry the system, and whether it helps in Vietnamese traffic.
How the system works
At a stop - brake held, speed zero - the engine management shuts the engine down instead of letting it idle. Release the brake or open the throttle and an automated restart (usually via the same starter motor or an ACG-type integrated starter-generator) fires the engine within a fraction of a second. The point is simple: an idling engine burns fuel for nothing, and urban riding in Vietnam is full of long red lights.
Verified models with the system
- Yamaha NMAX 155: Stop and Start System II (Yamaha’s page describes auto engine cut and restart on throttle input).
- Yamaha NVX 155: Stop & Start System (SSS), listed among the version’s features.
- Yamaha Janus 125: Stop & Start system listed on the official page.
- Honda Vario 125: idling stop listed among the eSP engine’s features.
Honda Vietnam’s pages list idling stop under the eSP/eSP+ engine family for the Vario; for other models we only state what the specific page states - nothing is inferred to siblings.
Does it suit Hanoi traffic?
The honest answer: the benefit is real but modest. A commute with many long stops (train-line crossings, big junctions) recovers the most fuel; dense stop-and-go filtering where you never fully stop for long exercises the system constantly. Fuel-injected engines with the system (all the models above are FI) restart cleanly; our fuel injection explainer covers why that matters. If you do the math, published consumption figures already include the system’s benefit - see our verified economy ranking.
What to know as a renter or buyer
- The first auto-restart surprises people; test it at a quiet junction before a full commute.
- The system works with the side stand and brake interlocks - the scooter will not restart into gear.
- Batteries on stop-start models work harder; our battery care guide covers what extends life.
- Stop-start does not replace good habits - our improving-fuel-economy guide shows what riders control directly.
Models without the system are not worse commuters - the Honda Vision publishes 1.82 L/100 km without it. Treat it as a convenience feature, not a deal-breaker; and contact us to confirm current availability of any specific model.
