The NMAX is Yamaha’s MAX-series premium scooter for Vietnam: a 155 cc machine with the sort of hardware list that used to belong only to big bikes - dual-wheel ABS, traction control and phone connectivity. Every figure below comes from the official Yamaha Motor Vietnam NMAX product page (retrieved 23 September 2026); anything Yamaha does not publish is left out rather than estimated.
Engine and performance
The NMAX runs Yamaha’s G3Y1E engine: a 155.1 cc single-cylinder four-stroke, liquid-cooled unit with SOHC, four valves and VVA - Yamaha’s variable valve timing that favours low-rev flexibility and high-rev punch at the same time. Official maximum power is 11.3 kW at 8,000 rpm and maximum torque 14.2 Nm at 6,500 rpm, fed by electronic fuel injection from a 7.1-litre tank. Published consumption is 2.26 litres/100 km; real-world figures vary with speed, load and conditions. Our VVA explainer covers what the variable valve system actually does.
Brakes and safety hardware
This is where the NMAX separates itself from almost every scooter in its price class: a 230 mm front disc AND a rear disc, both with ABS (dual-channel), plus a traction control system that reduces wheel spin when you accelerate hard on slippery surfaces. ABS and traction control do different jobs - our TCS vs ABS guide explains the difference - and the combination makes the NMAX one of the best-equipped mainstream scooters sold in Vietnam.
Size, weight and comfort
Yamaha lists 131 kg weight, 770 mm seat height, 1935 x 740 x 1200 mm dimensions, 1,340 mm wheelbase and 127 mm ground clearance. The two-level seat gives rider and pillion their own positions, and the underseat bay holds 24 litres - enough for a full-face helmet plus extras. Maximum payload is listed at 167 kg; what that figure means for rider, passenger and luggage is covered in our payload guide.
Technology
A smart key lets you unlock, open the seat and start without a metal key. The Y-Connect app link brings call and message alerts, fuel-consumption tracking and maintenance reminders to the cockpit, and there is a USB Type-C charging port. A Stop and Start System II switches the engine off at traffic lights and restarts it when you twist the throttle - our idling-stop explainer covers how these systems behave in Hanoi traffic.
Who it suits
Riders who want maximum safety equipment and are willing to pay for it: Yamaha’s list price at retrieval time was 69,000,000 VND for the standard NMAX, with a TECH MAX version also offered. Cross-shoppers should read our NMAX vs NVX 155 comparison (same engine, different mission) and our NMAX vs Honda SH160i duel of the premium icons.

What to check before you ride one
Tyre wear on the 110/70-13 front and 130/70-13 rear, brake feel at both levers and the pre-ride basics in our motorbike safety checklist. Licence classes in Vietnam follow engine capacity - our licence guides explain which class a 155 cc scooter requires.
