Yen So Park is the biggest single piece of green in Hanoi’s inner orbit — around 320 hectares of lake, lawns and planted avenues at the Phap Van–Cau Gie expressway intersection in the far south of the city. Where the central parks are pockets, Yen So is a landscape, and it is one of the few places near the city where the riding itself feels like countryside.
The route
The park sits about 10 km south of the centre. The published location anchors are the expressway intersection and the former Hoang Mai district — in practice, ride the southern arterial corridors (the Phap Van direction) and follow park signage as you approach the Gamuda Gardens area. The ride out is wide-arterial work: divided roads, buses, long junctions. It is the same style as the ring-road guide describes — predictable but fast, so run lights and hold a steady line.
What the park offers
Scale. The park wraps a chain of lakes with long, flat, traffic-free roads through trees — the loops inside the park are among the best easy riding surfaces anywhere in Hanoi, with no cars and almost no through-flow. Families come for the lawns, the lake views and the picnic spots; riders come because a 323-hectare park means kilometres of quiet tarmac. Bring a camera-friendly hour around late afternoon, when the light comes across the water.
Crowds and timing
Weekend afternoons are the local family peak — the entrance lots fill and the internal roads gain pedestrian traffic that treats the tarmac as a footpath. Go early morning for empty roads, or accept the weekend bustle for its own atmosphere. Weekdays are almost empty; in the wet season, the park drains well but the approach roads spray — take the rain gear.
Practical notes
Parking is organized at the main entrances with attendants. There are food and drink options around the entrance area, but nothing deep inside the park — carry water. Combine the trip with a look at the wider south: the Linh Dam lake loop on the way back makes a natural return route.
