Hoang Mai is the south of Hanoi — the direction the city sprawls toward the delta. Where the central districts are dense and vertical, Hoang Mai is horizontal: apartment campuses, lakes, wide new roads and the city’s biggest green lung. Since the July 2025 restructuring the district name has been absorbed into new wards, but for riders “Hoang Mai” still means the whole southern belt from Linh Dam to the expressway gateway.

What the area is

The defining features are water and space. The Linh Dam peninsula, surrounded by its lake, is one of the largest apartment areas in Hanoi; further south, Yen So Park — with over 300 hectares at the Phap Van–Cau Gie expressway intersection — is one of the city’s largest parks. The area also holds the main southern gateway out of the city: the expressway toward Ninh Binh starts here.

How it rides

This is the easiest large-scale riding in central Hanoi’s orbit. The arterial roads — Nguyen Van Linh, Nguyen Xien, Phap Van — are wide, mostly divided, and built for through-traffic. Speeds are higher than in the core, which changes the risk profile: the dangers here are big junctions, concrete median gaps used as unofficial U-turns, and buses swinging between stops. Ride predictably, light up early for junctions, and treat every median gap as a place where someone will emerge.

At rush hour the main corridors clog at the junctions that connect toward the centre, but the internal streets stay rideable. Weekend mornings see family traffic around Linh Dam lake and the park approaches — expect children on bikes and slower, meandering flow.

Parking and stopping

Parking pressure here is much lower than in the centre. The apartment campuses have formal motorbike garages; the park entrances have attended lots; and street-side parking is generally available outside peak shopping windows. If you ride to Yen So Park, use the designated parking at the entrance rather than leaving the bike on the dyke-road shoulders.

Why riders end up here

Three reasons. First, cost: it is one of the more affordable places to base a monthly rental while staying within a 20–30 minute ride of the centre. Second, the expressway gateway: anyone riding south toward Ninh Binh or the Perfume Pagoda region starts from here. Third, recreation: the park-and-lake combination makes it Hanoi’s best weekend-ride destination inside its own boundary.
