Nobody wants this article until they need it. The honest version: on a rental, theft is primarily the renter’s exposure, limited by the deposit and shaped by the contract. Prevention is the whole game.

The responsibility split

The bike is in your custody during the rental. If it is stolen, the standard rental logic is:

  • The deposit (typically 2,000,000-5,000,000 VND) is the first and often the whole of the settled exposure.
  • Beyond the deposit, terms vary by contract - some rentals hold the renter responsible for the bike’s value, others cap at the deposit for theft with documented forced entry. Read the theft clause before you sign, not after the bike is gone. This is a genuine contract-to-contract difference in Hanoi, and it is the one clause worth asking about explicitly.
  • The shop’s compulsory third-party insurance does not cover theft of the bike - it covers damage the bike does to others, nothing else.

What to do in the first hour

  • Report to the police and get the report (biên bản): the shop needs it for any settlement, and you need it for your travel insurance claim, if your policy covers vehicle theft at all (many do not cover rented two-wheelers - check before you ride, not after).
  • Call the shop with the facts: where, when, what was locked, what the police said.
  • Keep every document with your name on it - the contract, the police report, the receipt trail.

The prevention that actually works

  • The lock routine, every single stop: steering lock on, key out, and a disc lock or chain if the bike has one.
  • Attended parking (gửi xe) over free sidewalks - the few thousand dong is theft insurance priced correctly.
  • Never leave the key in the bike. Ever. Most “thefts” of rentals are absences of locks, not feats of burglary.
  • At night, indoor or guarded parking beats the street, especially in central districts.

One more responsibility that riders miss

Handing your rental to a friend is your risk, not theirs - the contract covers the named renter, and the lending article (in the legal cluster) covers the fines side of that mistake.

Rent with the theft clause read, the lock habit built, and the parking few thousand dong spent gladly. The deposit article covers the holding side; this is the downside case.
