The deposit is the part of the rental people worry about most, and the return is where that worry resolves. Here is the actual mechanism.

The standard timeline

The deposit (typically 2,000,000-5,000,000 VND) is held in cash for the rental period. At return, inside opening hours (09:00-21:00), the shop walks the bike against its handover state, and if the bike matches, the cash comes back on the spot - usually within minutes of the walk-around. Count it before you leave the counter.

What the walk-around checks

The same items your handover photos recorded: panels and scratches, mirrors, lights, brakes, tyres. With a timestamped photo set, this is a comparison, not a debate. Fair wear is expected and never charged: dust, kilometres, a lightly scuffed lever from a stationary drop is a conversation, a bent frame is a settlement.

What gets deducted

  • Damage beyond fair wear, at an agreed repair price - not a list price from the shop’s imagination. Ask for the repair quote.
  • A missing or lost key (the lost-key article covers this).
  • Late hours: 20,000 VND per hour, with a full additional rental day (typically 150,000-200,000 VND) possibly charged beyond six hours late.
  • Fuel shortfalls against the agreed level.
  • Consumables that were yours under the agreement - inner tubes and tyres can be the renter’s responsibility depending on the situation.

What does not touch the deposit

The shop’s maintenance: oil, chain, tyre pressure, inspection. A mechanical failure through normal use is not a deduction - it is the owner’s bike to fix.

If there is a dispute

The record is the contract and the handover photos. This is why both exist. Shops that photograph at handover (ask - good ones do) settle returns in under a minute; renters who photograph protect themselves from the shops that do not.

The rule that prevents it all

Take the photos. Every panel, both sides, at handover, sent to the shop’s chat. The deposit article covers the holding side; this covers the coming-back side. Done right, the return is the quietest part of the rental.
