Mid-rental bike swaps happen for three reasons: your needs changed (a passenger joined, a day trip appeared), the bike has a problem, or you simply want to try something else. All three are workable — if the terms are agreed with the shop rather than assumed.
Ask, do not assume
Swaps are a shop-by-shop, case-by-case arrangement, not an entitlement. The rental agreement (motorbike-rental-agreement-hanoi) governs your period and rate; a swap means a fresh handover, and any rate difference between bikes gets settled with the shop. Message the shop early: the earlier you raise it, the more likely your preferred replacement is free on your dates — contact us to confirm current availability of a specific model.
Transferring the rental fairly
Three things need explicit agreement in a swap: the daily/weekly/monthly rate going forward (rates differ between models — see the published table in motorbike-rental-price-hanoi), the day count (does the swap day count against the old bike, the new, or split), and the fuel level convention on both handovers. Put the agreed points in a message; the same habit that protects the first handover protects the second.
Deposits in a swap
If the new bike carries the same deposit band, shops typically carry the held deposit across. If the deposit bands differ (deposits run typically 2,000,000–5,000,000 VND depending on the bike — motorbike-rental-deposit-hanoi), the difference is topped up or refunded per the shop’s arrangement. The safe pattern: close out the first bike’s condition with photos, then open the second bike’s record with photos, so the two deposits never share one ambiguous memory. How clean returns work is in how-deposit-returns-work-hanoi.
Inspect the new bike like day one
A swap is a full handover: brakes, lights, horn, mirrors, tyres, existing scratches, fuel cap location, cold start — the complete checklist is in rental-motorbike-inspection-checklist. This is the moment that catches the previous renter’s problems before they become yours.
The classic swap scenarios
- Automatic to semi-automatic (or the reverse) when the riding changes — the trade-offs are in automatic-vs-manual-motorbike-hanoi and scooter-vs-semi-automatic-hanoi
- Smaller to larger bike when a passenger or a longer trip appears — see best-motorbike-for-two-people-hanoi and best-motorbike-for-long-distance-vietnam
- Problem bike to replacement bike when something feels wrong — see rental-motorbike-feels-wrong for what justifies a swap rather than a repair
Logistics
Getting to the shop for a swap is easy inside Hanoi — arrange pickup or delivery as with the original rental (motorbike-rental-pickup-or-delivery-hanoi); delivery arrangements depend on location and are agreed case by case.
The short version
Message first, agree rate/days/fuel in writing, settle the deposit band, inspect the new bike from scratch. A swap done this way is a ten-minute conversation.
