Vietnam’s default touring image is a semi-automatic Wave with a backpack — but the sport underbone class (Honda Winner R, Yamaha Exciter 155 VVA) is a genuinely capable tourer for riders who want a clutch. Here is what the verified manufacturer data (retrieved 23 September 2026) says about taking one far.

Range and economy

  • Winner R: 4.5 L tank, published consumption 2.59 L/100 km (UDC method — Honda notes the measurement method changed; real-world use varies).
  • Exciter 155 VVA: 5.4 L tank, published consumption 2.07 L/100 km.

That gives both bikes a touring range in the low hundreds of kilometres per fill in real conditions — enough that fuel planning matters on remote stretches but rarely in the populated corridors. Our fuel-range explainer turns tank figures into practical distances.

Comfort over distance

Sport underbones trade comfort for stance: the seat is firmer than a commuter’s, the position loads your wrists, and the 795 mm seats (both, per the manufacturer pages) are tall for shorter riders. Practical mitigations: a lighter grip, breaks every 90-120 minutes, and luggage kept low and central — our luggage-carrying guide covers loads properly.

What handles the miles well

The 17-inch wheels and wider rear tyres (120/70-17 both) are more stable than commuter rubber at highway speed; the disc brakes handle repeated descents; and the liquid-cooled engines are built to sustain highway revs all day — air-cooled commuters are the ones that suffer there. The Exciter’s six-speed gives a relaxed cruise gear, and the Winner R cruises at highway speeds comfortably.

Where the class stops making sense

Long two-up touring with heavy luggage, and true off-road segments — the low-ish clearance, firm suspension and sport tyres are road tools. For riders mixing a big loop with city living, though, a manual sport underbone is the most fun per dong Vietnam sells. Our 150cc manual guide ranks the options, and the day-trips-from-Hanoi guide covers the routes to test one on first. Rental availability of any model: contact us to confirm current availability.
