Under 40 million VND sits the heart of the Vietnamese scooter market - the machines students, commuters and first-time buyers actually ride. This guide lists only manufacturer-suggested retail prices we verified on official Honda and Yamaha Vietnam pages (retrieved 23 September 2026). List prices change and dealers differ - treat these as the verified baseline, and confirm the out-the-door price with a dealer.

The verified under-40m field

Scooter Verified list price What it is
Yamaha Janus 125 from 29,151,000 VND Lightest entry 125, 97 kg, 1.98 L/100 km
Yamaha FreeGo 125 from ~30,340,000 VND Sporty budget 125 with a 25L bay and an ABS S version
Yamaha Gear 125 Hybrid from 30,437,000 VND (34,364,000 premium) Hybrid assist, 1.7 L/100 km, SmartKey
Yamaha Latte 125 from 38,291,000 VND (2025 colour version) 37L storage, 100 kg, 1.80 L/100 km

The Honda Vision sits under this bracket too but Honda’s Vision page did not publish a retail list price at our retrieval date, so we do not state one. The full price ladder including everything above 40 million is in our verified new-scooter price table.

What the money buys at each step

  • Around 30 million: the Janus/FreeGo/Gear trio - modern engines, smart keys, and in the Gear’s case hybrid assist and the best published economy in the country (1.7 L/100 km).
  • Around 38 million: the Latte - near-premium storage (37 litres) and features at an entry-mid price. It is the value pick if cargo matters.

What you give up under 40 million

No scooter in this bracket publishes dual-wheel ABS; only the FreeGo S offers ABS at all (see our ABS availability guide). Traction control does not exist at this price. Storage tops out at the Latte’s 37 litres. If those matter, the next brackets start around 42 million (Air Blade family, Vario 125) - see our price table.

Buying versus renting at this budget

A 30-million-VND scooter plus registration, insurance and gear is a real commitment for a visitor or a first-year expat. Our renting vs buying comparison works through the math for Hanoi residents; if you stay under about a year, monthly rental of a price-published model (for example Honda Click or Yamaha Mio at 1,000,000-1,200,000 VND/month, or Honda Vision at 1,800,000-2,000,000 VND/month) often wins.
