Buying a scooter in Vietnam is straightforward, but the paperwork, the market and the choices all have local specifics. This guide uses manufacturer-verified model data (retrieved 23 September 2026) and links to our detailed guides for each step.
Step 1: pick the class, then the model
Most first-time buyers land in the 110-125 cc automatic class: light, economical, easy to resell. The entry duel is Honda Vision (109.5 cc, from 31,506,545 VND listed) vs Yamaha Janus (124.9 cc, from 29,151,000 VND) - our comparison covers it. Bigger budgets move up the classes in our 110cc vs 125cc explainer and premium scooter guide. Buy what you will ride, not what impresses: solo commuters lose money on a 160.
Step 2: decide new or used
A new bike from an official dealer carries the manufacturer warranty (Yamaha lists 3 years/30,000 km on its scooters) at the cost of first-year depreciation. Used bikes save money but need a proper inspection - our used motorbike inspection guide is the checklist. For shorter stays, renting usually beats buying: see the renting vs buying comparison.
Step 3: paperwork and legality
- Licence: the A1 class covers up to 125 cc - confirm what you can ride in our licence guides before choosing engine size.
- Registration: a bought bike must be registered in your name; keep the registration card with the bike (our documents guide).
- Insurance: compulsory civil liability insurance is a legal requirement - our insurance guide explains what it covers and does not.
Step 4: the buying checks
Test the actual bike, not the brochure: sit on it (seat height guide), check the storage bay (storage comparison), and verify the model year matches the papers. Have a mechanic look over any used purchase - our mechanic guide helps non-Vietnamese speakers navigate that conversation.
If you are not staying long
Long-stay visitors and new expats often start with a rental while deciding - Nguyen Tu’s monthly rates (published for the Vision, Air Blade, Click, Mio classes) let you live with a model before committing money. Contact us to confirm current availability.
