A rental doing real mileage - a commuter’s month, a touring fortnight - is a bike consuming consumables faster than a weekend pootle. Long before anything fails, the bike should go back for a look.

The guidance, stated honestly

The owner’s practical guidance for high-mileage rental use: bring the bike back for inspection around every 1,500 km of use, or more often if something feels off. This is owner guidance from experience of these bikes - it is not a manufacturer service interval, and it should not be presented as one. Manufacturers publish their own schedules for their own models; a rental shop’s guidance is about catching wear on a bike that changes hands every few weeks.

What a check covers

The shop’s maintenance list: engine oil level and condition, chain tension and lubrication, tyre pressures and wear, brake pads and cables, plus a general look-over of the things daily riders stop noticing. On a 110-125 cc city bike, 1,500 km is several weeks of commuting - enough time for oil to get thirsty, a chain to stretch, and a rear tyre to square off.

How it fits a rental

On monthly rentals this is built into the arrangement: the bike lives with you, the maintenance is the shop’s side of the deal, and the check is a short visit - not an interruption. The commute article shows the monthly-rate arithmetic; this is its mechanical counterpart. There is no charge for the shop’s own maintenance items; the visit is how they get done.

Between checks, the renter’s part

  • Watch the oil level (underbones have a sight glass or dipstick; ask at handover which).
  • Tyre pressures at any fuel station, weekly-ish.
  • Chain look-and-lift weekly (the chain article).
  • Symptoms reported early, always (the feels-wrong article).

The touring case

A long-distance trip can put 1,500 km on in a week. That is fine - the guidance scales to distance, not calendar. Plan a mid-trip check into any big loop: the shop can advise before you leave on what to watch, and a provincial mechanic can handle the basics en route (keep receipts and tell the shop at return).
