Thung Nai — “the submerged valley” — is the gateway to Hoa Binh lake, the huge reservoir behind the Hoa Binh dam where flooded hilltops stand as islands. At roughly 100 kilometres from Hanoi up the Highway 6 corridor, it sits right at the edge of what is comfortable as a day trip: possible in a long day, better as an overnight.

The route

Highway 6 southwest through Hoa Binh province is one of the north’s classic riding corridors: wide, busy at the town crossings, then climbing through forested hills. The last kilometres to the lake descend to wharves where boats of the local cooperatives run tours of the islands, the Thac Bo cave and shrines, and Muong ethnic villages on the far shores. Count about two hours each way, plus stops — fuel and food are available along the way, and traffic police patrol the corridor, so keep to the limits and carry your documents.

On the lake

The day-trip formula: arrive mid-morning, take a boat for two to four hours among the islands, eat fish at a stilt restaurant on the shore, ride home. The scenery is genuinely different from anything near Hanoi — wide water, steep green islands, and a sense of the highlands beginning. Riders who overnight in homestays on the far shore get the better deal: the lake at dawn, with mist, is the image people make the trip for.

Day trip or overnight?

  • As a day trip, leave by 7 a.m., boat by 10, lunch at 1, home before dark — tight but doable.
  • As an overnight, Thung Nai is an easy first multi-day ride from Hanoi, and the natural stepping-stone toward Mai Chau further up the same corridor.
