Long-distance riding in Vietnam is a different discipline from city riding, and the bike is only one of the preparations. It gets first claim here.

What long distance demands

  • Sustained speed with margin: the highways flow at 50-80 km/h. A bike that cruises relaxed at that pace - not at its redline - is a bike that finishes the day without shaking your hands numb.
  • Comfort: a real seat, an upright position, and ideally a windscreen for the highway sections.
  • Reliability with a repair network: this is the underbone’s hidden strength - every town in Vietnam can fix a Honda Wave-class bike by the roadside, and parts are everywhere.
  • Load capacity: luggage for days means a rack, bungees, and a bike that carries a passenger’s worth of weight without drama.

The honest machine ranking

  1. Semi-automatic underbones (Wave, Sirius class): the touring reality of Vietnam. Slow but unstoppable, fixable anywhere, unbeatable logistics.
  2. Mid-size automatic scooters (Air Blade, Vision class): comfortable on good roads, best when the route sticks to paved highways.
  3. Manual 125-150 cc and up: the right tool if your licence covers it and you already ride manuals - engine braking and power matter in the mountains.

The licence and law layer

Bigger bikes need bigger licence classes: A1 covers up to 175 cc; the A class covers larger. Riding long distance unlicensed multiplies exposure - hours on the road, multiple provinces, checkpoint probability. And motorbikes are banned from the expressways entirely; long-distance riders take the old national highways, which is part of the experience.

The rental-side preparations

Rent from a shop that maintains its bikes, do the full inspection checklist, photograph the bike, and agree in writing that the rental covers your provinces - some rentals restrict riding outside Hanoi, so ask. Breakdown, puncture and maintenance responsibilities should be clear before a long trip; the breakdown article covers the standard division.

Contact us to discuss long-distance rental and confirm availability - a multi-week highway bike should be chosen with the shop, not off a list.
