The Perfume Pagoda (Chua Huong) is northern Vietnam’s most famous pilgrimage complex — a spread of temples and shrines folded into a karst river valley in My Duc, about 55–60 kilometres southwest of Hanoi. Riding there is only the first stage of a trip that continues by boat on foot: the classic Hanoi day out that combines all three.
The ride out
Follow the southwest corridor onto National Highway 21B; published guides put the run at roughly 55 kilometres and just under two hours from the city centre. The road is in good condition and mostly flat, running through delta towns and past market gardens. On weekends in festival season (late winter to early spring, centred on the lunar new year period) the road fills with coaches and pilgrim convoys — leave early, and expect the last kilometres into the wharf area to be slow.
Boat stage
At the river landing, the motorised sampans of the local rowing cooperative take visitors up the Yen stream through the karst. Boats are hired with rowers at the wharf — this stage is part of the experience, gliding between cliffs to the landing below the main temples. Park the bike at the wharf’s attended lots; you will be gone several hours.
Temples and the cave
From the top landing, the complex spreads on both sides of the valley: Trinh temple by the stream, the main Huong Tich cave reached by either a long stair climb or a cable car, and a chain of smaller shrines between. Inside the Huong Tich cave pagoda, the smoke, bells and stalactite “altars” explain why this is the busiest pilgrimage site in the north. Wear secure shoes — the steps are steep and, in mist, wet.
Practical notes
- This is a full day: two hours out, boat, climbing and temple time, two hours back. Start by 7–8 a.m.
- Bring modest clothing for temples and a layer — the valley is cooler than Hanoi.
- The pilgrimage season (roughly February to April) is crowded but atmospheric; off-season weekdays are almost empty, though some facilities close.
- Watch fuel: tank up before leaving the district town — stations thin out near the valley.
