Two of the most atmospheric pagodas near Hanoi sit in the hills southwest of the city: Thay Pagoda, the 11th-century home of Vietnamese water puppetry, and Tay Phuong Pagoda, famous for its lacquered arhat statues. The pair is about 30 kilometres out — a half-day trip on the bike, and one of the shortest rides on this site that still feels like leaving the city entirely.
The ride
From central Hanoi, head southwest past the built-up districts and out toward Quoc Oai on the main corridor; total distance to the pagoda area is around 30 kilometres, or roughly 45 minutes of riding in light traffic. The two pagodas are a short ride apart, so the sensible plan is Thay first, then loop to Tay Phuong, then roll home the same corridor. The roads are plain, surfaced and flat — no technical challenge, only the usual attention needed at junctions and market-town crossings.
Thay Pagoda
Thay (Thien Phuc Tu) sits at the foot of a limestone outcrop beside a small lake, with a water-puppet stage on the water — the art form is said to have originated at this village. Behind the pagoda, rough steps and a path climb the rock to small shrines and hermitages with views over the delta. The climb is short but worn underfoot; ride-appropriate shoes double as temple-appropriate shoes here. Modest dress applies — cover shoulders and knees.
Tay Phuong Pagoda
Tay Phuong is the classic red-lacquered timber pagoda, reached by a long flight of steps. Inside, its 18th-century arhat statues are considered among the finest pieces of traditional sculpture in northern Vietnam — each figure a distinct, worldly character. The setting is a quiet hilltop with a compound of old trees; it is the slower, more contemplative stop of the two.
Timing and practical notes
- A comfortable plan is a late morning at Thay, lunch nearby, and Tay Phuong early afternoon, home by mid-afternoon.
- Festival seasons (Thay’s is in early spring) bring crowds; weekday visits are quiet.
- Steps and temple grounds mean you park in village lots and walk — bring a lock.
