Thai Nguyen, the tea capital of northern Vietnam, is one of the most underrated day-ride directions from Hanoi: a province of midland hills, tea plantations and the large Nui Coc reservoir, about 70–100 kilometres from the capital depending on which end you ride to. The classic day combines the Tan Cuong tea hills with the lake.

The route

Ride north on the Thai Nguyen corridor (the old Highway 3 side of the city, past the airport turn-offs); count roughly 1.5–2 hours to Thai Nguyen city. From there the fun starts: the tea country of Tan Cuong lies just southwest of the city, with rolling estate roads between the bushes — this is the most photogenic riding of the day. The published route from Thai Nguyen city runs roughly 10 km through the tea hills toward the lake area.

Tea and lake

In Tan Cuong, family operations offer tastings of the strong local green tea and sell directly from the drying yards; the cooperative estates welcome visitors who ride in respectfully. Ride on to Nui Coc, a reservoir built in the 1970s–80s to irrigate the province’s fields, now an ecotourism area of islands, boat rides, lakeside walks and a hilltop temple. The lake legend — of the girl Coc and her fisherman — is told everywhere on the shore. Boats, ferries to the islands and a relaxing circuit road make the afternoon; the tea makes the souvenir.

Practical notes

  • Cool mornings are the best time in tea country — pickers are in the fields before the heat.
  • Fuel is easy in Thai Nguyen city; top up before the lake roads.
  • Weekend afternoons get busy at the lake; weekdays are quiet.
