Dai Lai is Hanoi’s easy northern escape: a large reservoir ringed by forested hills in Phuc Yen, Vinh Phuc — about 40–50 kilometres up the road past Noi Bai airport, roughly an hour on the bike. It is the natural first out-of-town loop for a newer rider: close, scenic and low-stress.
The route
Ride north on the airport corridor, continue past Noi Bai toward Phuc Yen, and the lake appears to the west, backed by the Tam Dao range in the distance. The lake has a circuit road — riding the full loop around the water with a stop or two is the classic Dai Lai day. Roads are decent and traffic thins quickly once the airport zone is behind you.
Around the lake
Dai Lai is a green-tourism and resort area: lakeside walkways, kayak and SUP rental through the resorts, picnic lawns, and hillsides planted with forest. Swimming areas operate through the resorts and beach clubs in season. For a day-tripper, the formula is simple: ride the loop, pick a lakeside spot for a long lunch, walk or swim, then roll home. In the heat of a Hanoi summer, the lake is one of the few nearby places where the afternoon is actually pleasant.
Combine it with Tam Dao if you want a bigger northern day: the hill station is a further climb up the same direction, though that makes a long ride on a small bike.
Practical notes
- Weekends bring Hanoi families; weekday mornings are quiet.
- Fuel up before turning off the highway — lakeside stations are sparse.
- Park in resort or attended lots when swimming; take your helmet with you.
