Navigation is the quiet deal-breaker of Vietnamese motorbike trips. Signal is generally good — but the mountains that are worth riding are precisely where coverage drops, and the routing defaults that work for cars can send motorbikes into trouble.
The expressway trap
The single biggest navigation mistake: car-mode routing that puts you on an expressway (CT-class roads). Motorbikes are banned from Vietnamese expressways, and map apps will happily offer them. Learn to refuse CT-road suggestions and follow the old national highways instead — QL (quốc lộ) roads are the two-wheel backbone of the country.
Google Maps
The default for most riders: good coverage of Vietnam, live traffic, and Street View useful for eyeballing a road before you commit to it. The critical habit is downloading offline areas for the whole route before leaving Hanoi — offline maps keep navigation working through mountain dead zones, and they should be refreshed weekly because road data changes. Download generously around your route, not just the line itself.
OSM-based offline apps
For mountain riding, OpenStreetMap-based apps (OsmAnd, Organic Maps and similar) have a different strength: they show small roads, tracks, ferries and elevation in fine detail, often including scenic back routes that Google routes you away from. Many long-distance riders keep both — Google for the corridor, OSM for exploring — with the full region downloaded offline. Once the data is on the phone, both families navigate entirely from GPS, so no data plan is needed in a dead zone.
Habits that matter more than the app
- Mount the phone properly and program the destination before moving (see the phone-mount guide — and remember that touching the phone while riding is a fine).
- Screenshot or write down the route’s key towns as a paper fallback; batteries die.
- Ask locally at fuel stops when a road “looks wrong” — closures and roadwork spread faster by word of mouth than by app.
- In fog or at night, navigate less and stop more.
