eSAF appears in Honda Vietnam’s technology sections for two of its newest scooters, and it explains a big part of why they feel the way they do. Here is what the manufacturer actually says about it.

What eSAF stands for

Honda Vietnam describes eSAF as a frame made of pressed (stamped) steel sheets joined by laser welding - a construction method the company developed in-house. On the Sh mode 125 page Honda describes the result as light weight, high durability and stable running; on the Vario 160 page as reduced weight and increased resilience compared with conventional construction.

Why pressed-steel frames are lighter

A traditional underbone or scooter frame is assembled from welded steel tubes. Stamping sheet steel into structural shapes lets engineers place material only where loads exist, and laser welding keeps the joints tight without heavy reinforcement. Less metal for the same stiffness means a lighter finished frame - and on a scooter, frame weight is a large share of kerb weight. See our verified kerb weight table for how Honda’s newest models compare.

Which scooters carry it

From the Honda Vietnam pages we verified: the Sh mode 125 (116 kg kerb weight) and the Vario 160 (118 kg - notably light for a 160-class machine with a 156.9 cc liquid-cooled engine).

What it means for riding in Hanoi

Light weight is not just a spec-sheet point: it changes how much effort a day of riding costs. Lighter machines are easier to paddle in jams, easier to park on kerbs, easier to catch when they tip at low speed - all daily Hanoi events. The trade-off is that very light machines feel less planted at speed than heavier long-wheelbase scooters, which our wheelbase explainer covers.

What eSAF does not mean

Honda makes no claim that eSAF changes crash safety, and neither do we - frame construction type is not a safety rating. It is a weight and manufacturing story, not a protective one.

Bottom line

If you are comparing the Sh mode 125 or Vario 160 against rivals, eSAF is a genuine reason both feel lighter than their class average. Sit on them and compare against a conventional-frame scooter back to back - and contact us to confirm current availability of any rental model.
