Hanoi is a city built on water — the Red River and a necklace of lakes that define its neighbourhoods. West Lake gets the famous loop, but the smaller lakes are the everyday scenery of riding here, and a day spent linking them is the best low-effort tour of the city on a bike.

The lake ladder

Hoan Kiem is the pivot: small, central, walking-street-fringed on weekends, and the natural start and end of any lake day. Bay Mau and the Thong Nhat park lakes beside it, just south, give the first green pause — a park loop where the riding is nominal and the shade is the point. Giang Vo, further west, is the sports lake: exhibition halls and stadium edges around a body of water that locals use as a running track. The Thu Le zoo lake sits in parkland near the west of Ba Dinh. And in the south, the Linh Dam lake loop and the lake chain around Hoang Mai — with Yen So at the far end — turn the tour suburban and calm.

The riding

A full lake day is 25–35 km of mostly flat, mostly pleasant urban riding. The character changes with each water: Hoan Kiem is pedestrian-dense, Bay Mau is park-slow, Giang Vo is wide-avenue, Linh Dam is apartment-campus calm, and the southern lakes are the closest thing to open-sky riding inside the city. Ride them in the morning light — east to west, sun behind you — and keep the pace unhurried throughout; this is a scenery day, not a mileage day.

Stops worth making

Each lake has one stop that earns its time: the Ngoc Son temple island at Hoan Kiem; the Tran Quoc pagoda on its West Lake peninsula — the oldest pagoda in the city; the cafe strips facing the water at Giang Vo and Thu Le; and the picnic lawns of the southern parks on weekends. Parking follows the park model everywhere: attended lots at the entrances, a few thousand dong, no drama.

Timing and weather

The lakes are a dry-season tour best done in the morning; after rain the lakeside paths and some access lanes get slick, and the pleasure drops fast. The seasons guide covers which months reward lake days most.
