Ban Gioc is the biggest waterfall in Vietnam and one of the largest border waterfalls in the world: roughly 300 metres wide and about 30 metres down, split by the Chinese frontier, at the end of a spectacular 90 kilometre ride north of Cao Bang city. The trip from Hanoi — about 270-286 km to Cao Bang on Highway 3, then the waterfall road over Ma Phuc Pass — is the classic northeast loop, best planned as four to five days.
Getting to Cao Bang city
The route leaves Hanoi on the QL3 through Thai Nguyen and Bac Kan country, reaching Cao Bang city in five to six hours of riding per most published guides. The QL3 corridor is busier and less lyrical than the northwest roads, so most riders treat day one as transport: steady progress, an early start, and a night in Cao Bang city with energy left for the fun part. Fuel and food are reliable along the QL3; the riding is a warm-up, not the highlight.
Cao Bang city to Ban Gioc
The 90 km north to the waterfall is what the trip is really about: Ma Phuc Pass, one of the great photographed bends of the northeast, then the karst country of the Cao Bang Geopark — a UNESCO-recognised limestone system covering roughly 3,275 square kilometres — and the drop into Trung Khanh district toward the falls. Budget the return journey at around two hours in each direction and go early: the falls sit at the end of the road, and you want to arrive with the light still good.
At the waterfall, park in the official area and walk to the viewing decks; bamboo-raft rides operate on the river pool in front of the falls (arranged locally, prices on site). This is a border zone — carry your passport and expect checkpoints, and keep drone photography off your list; the frontier is watched.
Making it a loop
The waterfall pairs naturally with the rest of the northeast: Pac Bo (Ho Chi Minh’s wartime base) north of the city, the Quang Uyen market country backroads, and — with more days — the link west through Bao Lac toward Ha Giang, or south to Ba Be Lake. Our northeast loop guide lays out the full circuit; the Ba Be guide covers the lake leg on its own. Run every leg through our offline-maps setup: geopark backroads are exactly where data coverage dies.
Practical plan
- Day 1: Hanoi to Cao Bang city (~270-290 km, 5-6 hours). Day 2: Ban Gioc and Trung Khanh, sleep in Cao Bang city or Trung Khanh. Day 3: Pac Bo and the geopark loops. Day 4: return via Ba Be or the QL3. Day 5 if riding the full loop.
- Budget with our trip-cost guide; homestays and small hotels exist in every overnight stop — confirm bike parking using our overnight-stays checklist.
- Winter (December-February) is cold and often foggy in the northeast; October-November and spring give the best riding windows per our seasons guide.
