Thanh Xuan is the southwest quadrant of central Hanoi: a dense band of apartment towers, big-box retail and wide arterials that riders pass through daily on the way between the centre and the southern districts. The July 2025 restructuring redrew its ward boundaries, but its streets are unchanged — and for a rider, those streets have a personality of their own.

What the area is

Thanh Xuan is where mid-city Hanoi turns modern: high-rise campuses around Nguyen Trai and Khuong Trung, shopping malls along the main corridors, and a concentration of underpasses that keep the big junctions flowing. The Trung Hoa and Le Van Luong underpasses — two of Hanoi’s dedicated motorbike-and-car tunnels — sit on or beside its borders, alongside the Thanh Xuan underpass. The Nguyen Trai corridor is the spine, running southwest toward Ha Dong.

How it rides

The area is built around a few high-capacity corridors crossed by quieter residential grids. The main roads carry buses, container-free but truck-adjacent delivery traffic, and fast scooters; the back streets are narrow, shaded and slow. The contrast is the ride: a Thanh Xuan journey usually means a fast stretch on a wide road, then a crawl through a lane of food stalls and parked bikes.

The underpasses deserve specific rider attention. They are the pleasant surprise of southwest riding — dry, lit, and free of junction chaos — but they concentrate traffic at speed. Keep your lights on, hold a steady line, and never stop inside; the tunnel walls hide a stopped bike from following traffic until it is very late. Outside the tunnel mouths, expect merging at the ramps.

Parking and stopping

The malls along the corridors have large attended motorbike garages — the easiest secure stops in the area. Street parking around the apartment campuses is managed by attendants and fills at school-release and dinner hours. Around the ward markets, expect narrow approach lanes where the parking starts before the market itself.

Why riders end up here

Thanh Xuan is a logistics zone for riders: it sits between the centre, Ha Dong and the southern districts, and its underpasses and wide roads make it the fastest southwest crossing in mid-city Hanoi. People who live here choose it for exactly that — apartment parking included, wide roads out, and a direct Nguyen Trai line to the silk villages of Ha Dong for weekend rides.
