A waterproof jacket that soaks through in year two was not broken — it was washed wrong. Waterproof membranes and durable water repellent (DWR) coatings die from grime, sweat and improper laundering, and Vietnam’s dust, sweat and humidity kill them faster than a European winter ever would.

What actually fails

The outer DWR coating is the first to go: dirt and oil let water wet the fabric, the face fabric saturates, the membrane cannot breathe from the outside, and you feel damp — from your own sweat, which riders misread as “leaking”. The membrane itself usually survives years; the surface treatment does not.

Washing properly

Wash technical garments in warm water with a technical cleaner or pure soap flakes — never ordinary detergent, never fabric softener, both of which clog membranes. Zip everything closed, remove armour and liners first, and wash inside out. Rinse twice: detergent residue is the silent killer. Then dry warm air where the label allows — gentle heat is part of reactivating the DWR, not a threat.

Reproofing

When water stops beading on the shoulders and forearms, apply a wash-in or spray-on reproofer made for the fabric type, then heat-activate per its instructions. A reproofer will not fix a torn seam or a delaminated membrane — seam-seal tape lifts with age, and a jacket wetting out in one spot after proofing means the membrane is done. Budget for replacement, not miracles: the economic sequencing of gear spending is in riding-gear-budget-priority-vietnam.

Vietnam-specific habits

Rinse mud and road dust off promptly — grit grinds into fabric as you ride. Never machine-dry on hot or iron directly. Between rainy seasons, store clean and bone-dry, because mould destroys membranes and linings — the storage logic mirrors storing-motorbike-long-term-vietnam thinking.
