Riding two-up on Vietnamese streets is normal life, but a passenger changes how any scooter behaves - braking distance, suspension load, low-speed balance. This guide uses verified manufacturer figures to rank what matters for pillion riding, without inventing load ratings Honda and Yamaha do not publish.

What matters with a passenger

Three verified numbers predict two-up behaviour better than marketing: kerb weight (how much bike there is to steady), wheelbase (stability with the extra mass high up), and underseat storage (you now carry two helmets and two sets of gear). See our kerb weight table and wheelbase explainer for the full data.

The verified candidates

  • Honda SH160i/125i - 134 kg kerb weight, 1,353 mm wheelbase, 16-inch wheels, 28 L storage. The heaviest, longest- wheelbase mainstream scooter sold in Vietnam: the most stable two-up platform on this list.
  • Yamaha NVX 155 - 125 kg, 1,350 mm wheelbase, wide 140/70-14 rear tyre, 25 L storage, split two-level seat. Nearly SH-level stability with sportier delivery.
  • Honda Vario 160 - 118 kg, but a 1,278 mm wheelbase and a 422 mm-wide flat floor (handy for a passenger’s bag between stops). Front ABS adds wet-weather security.
  • Honda Air Blade 160 - 113 kg, 1,286 mm wheelbase, compact body. Lighter and easier in traffic, and it is on Nguyen Tu’s published rental price list (200,000 VND per day, 800,000 VND per week, 1,400,000 VND per month).
  • Honda Lead 125 - 114 kg with a 760 mm seat and a 37 L bay: less outright stability, but the easiest loading and helmet stowage for two.

Style scooters like the Latte and Grande (both 100 kg, small wheels) are single-rider machines first - fine for occasional short pillion hops, not the choice for daily two-up commuting.

The non-negotiables

Vietnamese traffic law and common sense both apply here: read our passenger rules guide for the legal position, make sure your pillion has a proper helmet (not a souvenir one - see the second helmet guide), and practise the balance techniques in our pillion riding article before mixing with Hanoi traffic. Insurance is not included with rentals - customers arrange their own.

Bottom line

For regular two-up use, choose weight and wheelbase: SH160i if budget allows, NVX 155 for sport, or an Air Blade 160 rental to start. For any model, contact us to confirm current availability.
