Student budgets change the question from “best” to “cheapest legal”. The answer splits on one line: do you have a licence?
Without a motorcycle licence
The legal options are the licence-free classes:
- E-bikes (200,000 VND per day published): no licence required, rider 16 or older. Bicycle-like, slow, cheap to run - no petrol at all.
- 50 cc motorbikes: no driving licence required (16+), but there is no published fixed rental price - contact the shop directly for 50 cc rates and availability.
For campus-and-neighbourhood life, these cover everything. They do not keep up with Ring Road traffic, and that is fine.
With a licence
The Honda Click and Yamaha Mio class at 150,000 VND per day is the student value pick - the cheapest full motorbikes on the published list, with the Vision at 200,000 VND as the roomier alternative. On weekly and monthly rates the Click/Mio class drops to 600,000-700,000 VND per week and 1,000,000-1,200,000 VND per month - the monthly rate is what a student staying a semester should be looking at. Longer terms are negotiable; contact us to discuss longer-term rental.
The budget beyond the rate
- Fuel: a rounding error on a 110-125 cc scooter.
- Parking: campus lots and attended street parking (gửi xe) cost a few thousand dong per stop - budget for it, it is daily.
- Deposit: typically 2,000,000-5,000,000 VND held for the period - real money for a student, and the reason handover photos matter.
- Helmets: included with the rental.
What students should not do
Rent above the licence they hold (the fine costs more than a semester of renting), buy a cheap used bike for one semester (registration transfer plus resale loss eats the saving - the renting-versus-buying article runs the numbers), or leave the bike unlocked around campus. Student areas have the city’s most opportunistic bike theft.
The short answer
Licence-free: e-bike or 50 cc. Licensed: Click or Mio class, monthly rate. Confirm availability for your semester dates early - students rent in waves at term start.
