Bac Tu Liem — the northern half of the old Tu Liem split — is the newest-feeling large territory inside Hanoi: tower campuses around West Lake’s northwest shoulder, wide new arterials, and a permanent construction hum at its edges. Riders pass through it between West Lake and the western ring; residents choose it for the space.
What the area is
The district runs from the Phu Thuong and Tu Hoa corners of West Lake up through the Ciputra campus zone toward Pham Van Dong boulevard — one of the city’s widest roads, built as a grand northwest axis. Between them sit quiet residential grids that are, street for street, among the pleasantest riding in Hanoi: smooth asphalt, shade, and almost no through-traffic.
How it rides
Three characters share the district. Around West Lake’s northern shore, the riding is the calm version of the Tay Ho experience — lake on one side, cafes on the other, weekend flow. Pham Van Dong boulevard is big-road riding: divided, fast, with long junctions and buses; treat it like the ring-road guide advises — steady line, lights on, no gambling at amber. And the internal grids are where you slow down and enjoy it.
Watch the construction edges: where new campuses meet unfinished frontage roads, surfaces change without warning, and trucks use the same gaps. Give heavy vehicles room and never assume a driver behind a load can see you.
Parking and stopping
Parking is easy by central standards. The tower campuses have garages, the lake cafes have attended kerb space, and the boulevard malls have large lots. Around the older village streets closer to the river, expect informal attendant parking and narrow gates.
Why riders end up here
Bac Tu Liem is a base-and-corridor district: people live here for apartment parking and clean roads, and the area gives fast access both to the West Lake loop for weekend riding and to the western ring for leaving town. For visitors it is mostly a ride-through — but the lake’s northwest corner is one of the least-crowded sections of the city’s classic loop.
