Ba Vi is the big forested massif you can see from western Hanoi on clear days, and riding into it is one of the most satisfying day trips from the city: about 60–70 kilometres out, then a long, cool climb through pine and cloud forest inside the national park. Count on roughly an hour and a half to reach the park area, plus the climb itself.

Getting there

The straightforward route runs west out of the city and follows Highway 32 through Son Tay — direct, well-surfaced and busy through the built-up stretches. Near the end of the approach, turn at the Tan Linh crossroad and continue a few kilometres to the park entrance. An alternative is to ride out the Thang Long corridor first and cut across to the same road; either way, the final approach is signed and the park gates are the landmark.

Fuel is easy on Highway 32, but top up before turning into the park — there is nothing to buy once you are inside.

The climb

From the entrance the road climbs continuously through the park, gaining altitude on sweeping bends until it reaches the upper area at around 1,100 metres, where there is a small rest area, a shop and the start of the walking trails to the old summit church ruins and the upper temples. The climb is several kilometres of steady gradient — sealed but damp, shaded and often misty. This is the best mountain-practice road near Hanoi: no traffic police worries, predictable bends, and views opening over the Day River plain.

At the top, the forest walks are short and well worth the dismount: the ruins of the old Catholic church are the classic photo, and the summit trails look north to peaks that in winter can be genuinely cold. Bring a layer — the temperature gap between Hanoi and the top can be startling, especially from November to February.

Practical notes

  • Start early: the climb plus walking plus the return ride makes a full day.
  • Weekends are busy with Hanoi families; the upper road can have a short entry queue at midday.
  • Descend in a low gear — the return leg is long and brake-fade on a loaded scooter is real.
  • Rain in the park turns the bends slick within minutes; check the forecast and do not gamble with afternoon storms.
